Conroe Rotary serves families at Rotary House

Conroe Rotary Club hosts monthly home-cooked meals at Rotary House for families facing medical crises, offering vital support & normalcy.

CONROE, Texas — For the families staying at the Rotary House in Conroe, the second Thursday of every month offers a reprieve from the sterile environment of hospital hallways and the anxiety of medical crisis. On April 11, the Rotary Club of Conroe continued this tradition, filling the facility’s dining area with the aroma of a home-cooked meal and the sound of supportive conversation.

The Rotary House, located near HCA Houston Healthcare Conroe, serves as a vital bridge for families traveling from outside the immediate area to be near loved ones receiving critical, long-term care. For these caregivers, the simple act of preparing a meal can often feel like an impossible chore amidst the demands of hospital visits and medical updates.

The club’s presence on April 11th saw a significant turnout from leadership, including current President Robert “Bobby” W. Williams and Past President Doris Ellis, who spearheaded the service effort. They were joined by Immediate Past President Ben Ramsey, President-Elect Janet Kasper, and President-Nominee Lisa O’Neill, who volunteered alongside her husband, Mike.

What sets this monthly initiative apart is its emphasis on community integration. The meals are not merely catered; they are the result of a long-standing vocational partnership with the Conroe High School Culinary Arts program. Under the guidance of Chef Michael, student cooks prepare the main courses, providing the high schoolers with real-world experience while ensuring the families receive high-quality, nutritious food.

"It is about more than just checking a box for community service," said one club member. "When we sit down to eat with these families, we are offering them a brief moment of normalcy and a reminder that they aren't navigating these challenges alone."

The tradition, which began in January 2023, has become a cornerstone of the club’s local outreach efforts. By committing to the second Thursday of every month, the Rotarians handle everything from the transport and serving of the food to the final clean-up, allowing the families to focus entirely on their loved ones.

The Rotary Club of Conroe has long been a fixture in the community, known for its dedication to humanitarian service and local development. This program is a direct reflection of the organization’s global motto, "Service Above Self," shifting the focus from large-scale fundraising to the immediate, tangible needs of neighbors in a crisis.

For families at the Rotary House, the presence of the club members provides more than sustenance; it provides a vital support network. As the club looks toward the remainder of the year, they intend to continue their partnership with the high school and maintain their monthly commitment to the facility.
