Conroe Son Charged with Mother's Murder

Conroe Son Charged with Mother's Murder

Conroe man Robert Dawson, 31, confessed to fatally shooting his mother, Kathleen Dawson, 58, inside their home over Memorial Day weekend.

CONROE, Texas — A 31-year-old Conroe man is being held on a $500,000 bond after authorities say he confessed to fatally shooting his mother inside their home over the Memorial Day weekend.

Robert Patrick Dawson was taken into custody Sunday, May 26, following the death of 58-year-old Kathleen Dawson. Deputies with the Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office responded to a residence in the 100 block of Deer Creek Drive shortly after neighbors reported hearing a gunshot emanating from the property.

Upon arriving at the scene, law enforcement officials discovered Kathleen Dawson deceased inside the home. Investigators confirmed that a handgun was recovered at the scene and identified as the weapon used in the shooting.

According to a spokesperson for the Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office, Robert Dawson remained at the residence when deputies arrived. He was detained without incident and later provided a confession to detectives regarding his involvement in the shooting.

Precinct 1 Justice of the Peace Wayne Mack formally arraigned Dawson, setting his bond at $500,000. As of Tuesday, Dawson remains incarcerated at the Montgomery County Jail.

The Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office Homicide-Violent Crimes Unit is continuing to process evidence and interview witnesses to determine a motive behind the domestic violence incident. While the investigation remains in its active stages, officials have indicated that the crime appears to be isolated to the household.

The tragedy has left the Deer Creek community in shock. Neighbors noted the quiet nature of the street, which is located in a residential area near the Conroe city limits.

The case is expected to be presented to a Montgomery County grand jury in the coming weeks. If convicted of murder, a first-degree felony under Texas law, Dawson faces a potential sentence of five to 99 years or life in prison.
