Conroe Special Election for City Council Place 1

Conroe Special Election for City Council Place 1

Conroe holds a special election May 4 for City Council Place 1. Councilwoman Christy Lee resigned to run for mayor; the winner serves until May 2026,

CONROE — Conroe residents are preparing to head to the polls this spring to fill a key vacancy on the City Council, following the resignation of Place 1 Councilwoman Christy Lee.

The special election, officially set for Saturday, May 4, 2024, was triggered after Lee stepped down from her seat to launch a bid for the mayor’s office. The Conroe City Council moved to formalize the election during their regular meeting on March 28, citing the necessity of maintaining full representation for the district for the remainder of the term.

The winner of the May 4 race will serve the remainder of the current term, which is scheduled to run through May 2026.

Candidates interested in filling the seat have a limited window to enter the race. The filing period opened on Friday, March 29, and will close at 5 p.m. on Monday, April 8. Prospective candidates must file their applications in person with City Secretary Soco Gorjon at the City Secretary’s Office, located at 300 W. Davis Street in Conroe.

For residents looking to participate in the democratic process, the window to ensure eligibility is rapidly closing. The deadline to register to vote in this special election is Thursday, April 4. Residents can verify their current registration status or update their information through the Montgomery County Elections Department website at https://elections.mctx.org.

Early voting for the Place 1 vacancy is scheduled to begin on Monday, April 22, and will run through Tuesday, April 30. During this period, residents can cast their ballots at designated early voting centers before the final opportunity on Election Day.

On Saturday, May 4, polling locations will be open from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. While specific precinct polling sites are often subject to change based on county requirements, the City of Conroe advises voters to check the official city website at www.cityofconroe.org for the most up-to-date list of polling places and sample ballots as they become available.

City officials emphasize that the vacancy represents a significant shift in the council’s makeup. As Conroe continues to experience rapid growth, the council has faced increased scrutiny regarding infrastructure, budget allocations, and annexation policies. The individual elected to Place 1 will play a direct role in shaping these city policies for the next two years.

For further information regarding election procedures, candidate requirements, or how to serve as a poll worker, residents are encouraged to contact the City Secretary’s Office directly at 936-522-3010.
