WILLIS, Texas — A family birthday celebration in the Sam Houston National Forest ended in tragedy late Sunday night, resulting in the death of a 20-year-old man and the arrest of two of his relatives on murder charges.
The Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office responded to reports of a shooting near the Stubblefield Recreation Area in the 11300 block of FM 830 shortly after 11:30 p.m. on Sunday, May 12. Upon arrival, deputies discovered 20-year-old Christian Alejandro Gallegos suffering from multiple gunshot wounds.
Emergency responders transported the victim to HCA Houston Healthcare Conroe, where he was pronounced dead.
Investigators determined that the violence erupted during a private birthday gathering held within the forest grounds. According to official reports, an argument broke out among family members, escalating until a .40 caliber handgun was discharged. In addition to the victim and the two primary suspects, another brother, Ricardo Gallegos, was present at the scene during the incident.
Following the shooting, two suspects—identified by the Sheriff’s Office as the victim’s brother, Jesus Gallegos, and their cousin, Cristian Gallegos, both 20—reportedly fled the immediate area. However, authorities noted that both suspects later returned to the scene, where they were taken into custody.
Both Jesus Gallegos and Cristian Gallegos remain in the Montgomery County Jail, each facing charges of murder.
The sound of the gunfire echoed across Lake Conroe, triggering alarm among residents in the distant Waterpoint area. Throughout the late hours of Sunday and early Monday morning, local social media forums were flooded with reports from residents who heard the shots and observed a significant influx of emergency flashing lights near the shoreline.
In a statement issued following the investigation, the Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office sought to reassure the public, characterizing the shooting as an isolated incident involving specific family members. Officials confirmed there is no ongoing threat to the community in Conroe, Willis, or the surrounding neighborhoods.
The investigation is being led by the Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office Homicide and Violent Crimes Unit. Anyone with additional information regarding the incident is encouraged to contact the Sheriff’s Office at 936-760-5800 or reach out to Multi-County Crime Stoppers at 1-800-392-STOP (7867).
