Houston Airports Massive Upgrades for World Cup

Houston Airports Massive Upgrades for World Cup

Houston's IAH and HOU airports are undergoing a nearly $2B overhaul for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

HOUSTON — As the countdown to the 2026 FIFA World Cup accelerates, Houston’s two primary gateways are undergoing a dramatic physical transformation. With the city set to host seven tournament matches, including a round-of-32 game and a semi-final, the Houston Airport System (HAS) is accelerating a massive capital improvement strategy aimed at elevating the city’s international profile and passenger throughput.

The dual-airport overhaul represents a combined investment of nearly $2 billion, designed to accommodate the estimated 1.5 to 2 million international visitors expected to descend upon the region in the summer of 2026. Officials emphasize that these projects are funded through a combination of federal grants, airport revenue bonds, and Customer Facility Charges (CFCs), ensuring that local tax dollars are not diverted to fund the construction.

At George Bush Intercontinental Airport (IAH), the Terminal Redevelopment Program (ITRP) serves as the crown jewel of the expansion. The $1.4 billion initiative is headlined by the construction of a new international terminal complex, which aims to address historical bottlenecks in customs and immigration processing. Central to the IAH experience will be the IAH Skyway, an Automated People Mover system designed to replace outdated shuttle bus operations. By late 2024, portions of this rail system are expected to come online, providing a vital link between all five terminals, parking facilities, and the new Consolidated Rental Car Facility (ConRAC).

The ConRAC project is particularly significant for IAH’s logistics, as it will consolidate various rental car brands into a single, seven-story structure housing roughly 7,000 parking spaces. Additionally, the development of "Concourse Tango" will add much-needed capacity for both domestic and international gates. Terminal B is also seeing a heavy lift, with a modernized, expanded TSA security checkpoint already in development to reduce wait times for the roughly 46 million passengers who traverse the airport annually.

Across town, William P. Hobby Airport (HOU) is undergoing its own $470 million face-lift known as the Hobby Airport Modernization Plan (HAMP). While IAH handles the bulk of long-haul international traffic, Hobby remains a critical hub for regional and domestic travel. The HAMP initiative focuses on modernizing terminal aesthetics, expanding ticketing counters, and significantly enlarging the baggage claim area to handle the heightened volume of luggage associated with tournament-goers.

Hobby travelers have already begun to see the dividends of these efforts; a state-of-the-art, expanded TSA security checkpoint was completed in late 2023, which officials say has already measurably reduced friction during peak travel hours. The airport is also integrating "lifestyle" improvements, including new covered outdoor seating areas, aimed at softening the sterile atmosphere of a high-traffic transit hub.

According to the Houston Airport System, the majority of the construction milestones for both IAH and HOU are slated for completion well before the first whistle blows in June 2026. The urgency of these projects goes beyond the tournament; as Houston continues to grow as a global business and tourism destination, the airport system is working to future-proof its infrastructure against a projected long-term increase in passenger demand.

For travelers looking to track the progress of these construction zones or view updated terminal maps, the Houston Airport System maintains a real-time project portal at fly2houston.com. As these enhancements come online over the next 18 months, passengers are advised to check the website frequently for temporary terminal closures, parking adjustments, and traffic flow changes within the airport loops.
