Hwy 242 Conroe: Truck Wreck, Fuel Spill Closes Road

Hwy 242 Conroe: Truck Wreck, Fuel Spill Closes Road

CONROE, Texas — A major multi-vehicle collision involving two 18-wheelers brought traffic to a standstill in Conroe on Friday afternoon, October 27, triggering a massive emergency response and a prolonged HAZMAT cleanup effort on the busy Highway 242 corridor.

The incident occurred at approximately 2:00 p.m. on the eastbound frontage road of Highway 242, also known as College Park Drive, in the area between Interstate 45 and Fellowship Drive. According to witnesses and reports from the scene, the wreck involved at least two tractor-trailers and one passenger vehicle.

The scale of the crash caused severe logistical challenges for first responders. One of the 18-wheelers was found jackknifed across the roadway, while the second tractor-trailer had overturned onto its side, effectively blocking all lanes of the frontage road. Officials confirmed that at least one person was trapped inside the wreckage following the initial impact. Rescue crews utilized specialized equipment to extricate the individual before transporting them for medical evaluation. The status of those involved has not yet been released.

The complexity of the scene was compounded by a significant fuel spill. One of the commercial vehicles ruptured its fuel tank during the collision, sending a large volume of diesel fuel across the asphalt. This necessitated the involvement of specialized hazardous materials (HAZMAT) teams to contain the spill and ensure the roadway was safe for environmental and structural integrity.

The Conroe Police Department, Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office, and the Department of Public Safety worked in coordination with the Conroe Fire Department and Montgomery County Hospital District (MCHD) EMS to manage the rescue and traffic flow.

The impact on local infrastructure was immediate and severe. Eastbound lanes of the Highway 242 frontage road were completely shut down for several hours. Additionally, traffic on the main lanes of Highway 242 experienced heavy congestion as law enforcement diverted motorists off the highway at the I-45 intersection to bypass the blockage.

Travelers were urged to avoid the College Park area for the duration of the afternoon as crews worked to upright the heavy vehicles and scrub the roadway of contaminants. The Conroe Police Department’s traffic division is continuing to investigate the sequence of events that led to the crash.

For ongoing updates on traffic conditions and road closures in the Montgomery County area, residents are encouraged to monitor the Montgomery County Office of Emergency Management website at mctxoem.org or check the official Texas Department of Transportation traffic maps at drivetexas.org.
