I-45 Conroe SB: Truck rollover, fuel spill closes lanes

I-45 Conroe SB: Truck rollover, fuel spill closes lanes

CONROE, Texas – A major traffic disruption crippled travel through Montgomery County on Tuesday after a tractor-trailer rollover forced the complete closure of the southbound main lanes of Interstate 45 for several hours.

The accident occurred shortly before 10:00 a.m. just north of the State Highway 105 interchange, a high-traffic corridor that serves as a primary artery for commuters heading toward Houston. According to the Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS), the driver of the 18-wheeler lost control of the vehicle, struck the center concrete median barrier, and overturned, effectively blocking all southbound lanes.

First responders from the Conroe Fire Department, the Montgomery County Precinct 1 Constable’s Office, and the Montgomery County Hospital District (MCHD) arrived within minutes of the call. Officials reported that the driver, whose identity has not yet been released, was found alert and communicative upon their arrival. He was transported to a local hospital for evaluation and is currently listed as being in stable condition with what responders described as minor injuries.

The complexity of the scene went beyond the physical wreckage. First responders quickly identified a significant environmental hazard, as the impact ruptured the truck's fuel tanks. Approximately 100 gallons of diesel fuel spilled across the highway surface, triggering an immediate response from the Conroe Fire Department’s Hazardous Materials (HazMat) team. The team spent several hours containing the spill to prevent fuel from entering local drainage systems.

Due to the hazardous conditions and the need to clear heavy debris, the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) diverted all southbound traffic onto the frontage road. Motorists faced severe delays throughout the day, with officials initially projecting an eight-hour closure to accommodate the cleanup, the removal of the trailer, and necessary structural inspections of the damaged center concrete barrier.

Local authorities emphasized that the barrier sustained significant impact damage, which required a thorough safety review before the lanes could be reopened to the public.

While the primary cause of the crash remains under investigation, DPS investigators are working to determine if mechanical failure, driver fatigue, or external road conditions contributed to the loss of control. No other vehicles were involved in the collision.

The I-45 corridor in Conroe is frequently subject to heavy congestion, and Tuesday’s incident serves as a reminder of the impact that commercial vehicle accidents can have on regional infrastructure. Drivers are encouraged to check the Texas Department of Transportation’s Drive Texas website at drivetexas.org for real-time updates on road conditions and to sign up for local traffic alerts.

The investigation is ongoing, and updates will be provided as additional details regarding the crash report are released by DPS.
