I-69 Southbound Closure Near Conroe: May 20-24

Conroe, TX: I-69 Southbound mainlanes near Grangerland Rd (Exit 113) will close 24/7 from May 20-24 for bridge demolition.
CONROE, Texas — Commuters traveling through Montgomery County are being urged to adjust their travel plans as the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) prepares for a major infrastructure undertaking on Interstate 69.
Starting Monday, May 20, all southbound mainlanes of I-69 will be closed 24/7 for a full five-day stretch, concluding on Friday, May 24. The closure is centered near the Grangerland Road exit (Exit 113) and is a critical component of the ongoing I-69 Northeast Gateway Project.
During the closure, all southbound traffic must exit the mainlanes at Exit 113. Drivers will be diverted onto the I-69 southbound frontage road and will be allowed to re-enter the mainlanes just past the Grangerland Road intersection.
Officials are warning motorists to expect significant bottlenecks and travel delays, particularly during the morning and evening rush hours. Commuters who utilize this corridor for their daily trek into the Greater Houston area are encouraged to consider alternate routes, such as U.S. 59 or FM 1314, or to allow for substantial extra travel time.
The demolition work was originally scheduled for the week of May 13, but was postponed by TxDOT due to inclement weather conditions across Southeast Texas.
The removal of the aging Grangerland Road bridge is part of a broader effort to modernize the I-69 corridor, improve drainage, and increase vertical clearance for heavy commercial vehicles. This project is a key element of the TxDOT Houston District’s mission to enhance safety and mobility along one of the region’s primary freight and commuter arteries.
While southbound travelers face this week’s disruption, those heading in the opposite direction should prepare for similar challenges. TxDOT has confirmed that a full closure of the I-69 northbound mainlanes at the same location is tentatively scheduled for sometime in June, as crews move forward with the installation of new bridge structures.
For real-time traffic updates, live road conditions, and official project alerts, motorists are encouraged to visit the TxDOT Houston District’s official traffic map at houstontranstar.org or follow @TxDOTHouston on X (formerly Twitter).
Construction schedules remain weather-dependent, and drivers should stay alert for changing traffic patterns as crews move heavy machinery into the work zone.
