Links Inc. Chapter Awards $50,000 in Scholarships

THE WOODLANDS — The Montgomery County Chapter of The Links, Incorporated, underscored its commitment to local academic excellence this past weekend, hosting its 17th annual "Summer Whites and Roses" Scholarship Luncheon at The Woodlands Waterway Marriott Hotel and Convention Center.

The May 25 event, which serves as the chapter’s flagship fundraiser, saw the organization reach a significant financial milestone. This year’s luncheon raised $50,000 for student scholarships, pushing the chapter’s total historical contributions to more than $300,000.

Six graduating seniors from across the district were honored as the 2024 scholarship recipients: Alyssa Carter and Abigail White of The Woodlands High School; Destiny Ezeocha and Chidera Umeokolo of Grand Oaks High School; Jessica Umuhoza of College Park High School; and Maya White of The Woodlands High School. The awards are designed to offset the rising costs of higher education for students demonstrating academic promise and community service.

Dr. Mitzi Allen, president of the Montgomery County Chapter of The Links, Incorporated, emphasized that the scholarship program is a core pillar of the organization’s mission. "Investing in our youth is the most effective way we can strengthen the fabric of our community," Allen said. "Each year, we are humbled by the caliber of students who apply, and we are proud to support their transition into the next chapter of their lives."

The event featured a keynote address from Dr. Melba St. John, a board member of the Montgomery County Hospital District, who spoke on the importance of leadership and community involvement.

The luncheon also served as a venue to celebrate collaborative philanthropy. The North Houston Suburban Chapter of Jack and Jill of America, Inc., was formally recognized for their $2,000 contribution to the scholarship fund, a donation that Dr. Cynthia Wilson and Linda Taylor, the luncheon’s co-chairs, noted was instrumental in reaching this year’s fundraising goal.

In addition to the presentation of scholarships, the afternoon included a silent auction and live entertainment, drawing local community leaders and stakeholders who gathered to support the cause.

The Links, Incorporated, is an international, not-for-profit corporation established in 1946, consisting of more than 17,000 professional women of African descent. The Montgomery County Chapter remains one of the area’s most active civic organizations, focusing on initiatives in the arts, health and human services, international trends, and services to youth.
