MISD Approves $160M Montgomery HS Renovation

Montgomery ISD launches a $160M expansion of Montgomery High School, funded by the 2022 bond.
MONTGOMERY, Texas — The Montgomery Independent School District is preparing for a transformative period as construction gears up for a massive $160 million expansion at Montgomery High School. The project, which was formally approved by the Board of Trustees on June 20, 2023, represents the largest single investment from the district’s 2022 bond package.
The initiative is a direct response to the rapid demographic shift in the Montgomery area. With the district projecting enrollment at the high school to climb to 2,500 students by 2030, administrators say the current facility—originally constructed to serve a smaller student body—requires significant modernization to maintain academic and safety standards.
The scope of the project at 1016 Farm to Market 149 is extensive, touching nearly every corner of the campus. Academically, the school will add a two-story, 10-classroom building and six state-of-the-art science labs. The interior overhaul includes a complete reimagining of the library, the administration suite, and art studios, as well as significant upgrades to both the existing and new band halls.
Athletics and co-curricular programs will also see major overhauls. The district has finalized plans for a new competition gym, updated locker rooms, and a large group instruction (LGI) room. Additionally, the district’s prominent agricultural science program will receive facility upgrades, while the exterior will see the addition of turf fields for the baseball and softball programs.
Beyond academic and athletic infrastructure, the project places a heavy emphasis on logistics and student safety. The plan includes a complete redesign of the campus driveway and parking configuration to alleviate the bottlenecks frequently reported during morning drop-off and afternoon dismissal. Furthermore, the district is incorporating advanced security enhancements across the campus to meet current safety standards for Texas public schools.
Construction is scheduled to occur in two distinct phases to minimize disruption to active school operations. Phase 1, which prioritizes the athletic facilities, is slated to begin in January 2024. District officials expect this phase to be completed by the fall of 2024.
Phase 2, the more complex academic and core facilities expansion, is set to commence in the spring of 2024. Due to the scale of the interior renovations and the new building construction, this phase will continue through the following two years, with a total project completion targeted for December 2026.
This project is a cornerstone of the 2022 bond referendum, which was passed by Montgomery ISD voters to address the infrastructure needs caused by the significant residential growth in Montgomery and Lake Conroe.
For ongoing updates on construction progress, traffic alerts related to the site, and detailed bond expenditure reports, residents are encouraged to visit the official district website at www.misd.org. The district has pledged to provide regular status updates to the community as construction reaches key milestones over the next three years.
