Montgomery ISD Exceeds State Averages on 2026 STAAR

Montgomery ISD celebrates Spring 2026 STAAR results, significantly outperforming state averages by 10-15+ points across most subjects/grades.

MONTGOMERY, Texas — Montgomery Independent School District is celebrating a milestone in academic achievement as preliminary data from the Spring 2026 State of Texas Assessments of Academic Readiness (STAAR) shows the district has significantly outpaced statewide averages across nearly every subject and grade level.

The report, released this week by the Texas Education Agency, highlights a widening gap between Montgomery ISD’s performance and the state baseline, reinforcing the district’s position as a top-performing system in the region.

According to the data, 78% of Montgomery ISD students met or exceeded grade-level benchmarks in Reading, a figure that sits 13 percentage points higher than the state average of 65%. In mathematics, students in grades 3 through 8 outperformed their peers across the state by 10 percentage points.

The success extended into secondary education, where the district’s high school students demonstrated mastery on End-of-Course (EOC) exams. Montgomery ISD students eclipsed state passing rates by more than 15 percentage points in core subjects including Biology and U.S. History.

Superintendent Dr. Amy Lacey said the performance surge is a validation of the district’s strategic shift toward personalized learning and intensive teacher support.

These results are a testament to the dedication of our students, teachers, and staff, Dr. Lacey said. Despite the lingering challenges from the pandemic, our focus on targeted instruction and a growth mindset has clearly paid off. We aren't just looking at these scores as numbers; we see them as indicators that our students are gaining the foundational skills necessary for post-secondary success.

The district’s investment in updated curriculum materials and comprehensive professional development programs appears to have played a significant role in the outcomes. Last year, the Board of Trustees approved a budget reallocation aimed at literacy intervention and STEM resources, a move that officials say is now yielding tangible dividends.

We’re incredibly proud of the hard work and commitment shown throughout our district, said Trustee Matt Hammond. It’s clear that the investments we’ve made in our curriculum and professional development are yielding positive outcomes for our students in Montgomery. This success belongs to the entire community, from the classroom to the boardroom.

The strong performance comes at a critical time as the district continues to navigate steady enrollment growth and the logistical demands of a rapidly expanding population in Montgomery County. Education analysts suggest that districts like Montgomery ISD are increasingly focusing on data-driven interventions, where teachers use ongoing assessments to pivot instruction in real-time, rather than waiting for end-of-year results.

While the district celebrates these gains, administrative leadership is already shifting its focus to the next academic cycle. District officials confirmed that they have initiated a deep-dive analysis of the Spring 2026 data to identify specific student cohorts that may require additional support or enrichment.

As we move forward, this ongoing analysis will inform refined instructional strategies, Dr. Lacey added. We have identified areas for continuous improvement as we prepare for the upcoming academic year to ensure that every student continues to move toward mastery.

Detailed performance breakdowns by campus and grade level are expected to be available for public review on the Montgomery ISD website, www.misd.org, by the end of the month. The district also plans to host a series of community forums in August to discuss the data and outline the instructional goals for the 2026-2027 school year.
