SHSU launches MS in Applied Biomedical Sciences

SHSU launches MS in Applied Biomedical Sciences

HUNTSVILLE, Texas – Sam Houston State University is expanding its footprint in the medical education landscape with the launch of a new Master of Science in Applied Biomedical Sciences. The university officially opened the application portal for the program on December 1, 2023, marking a significant milestone in the institution’s efforts to bolster the regional healthcare talent pipeline.

The 36-hour graduate degree, slated to welcome its inaugural cohort in the fall 2024 semester, is specifically curated to serve as a bridge for students aiming for professional advancement. By offering a rigorous academic curriculum, the program serves two primary demographics: students seeking to improve their competitive standing for professional schools—such as medicine, dentistry, and physician assistant programs—and those who intend to pursue advanced careers in laboratory research or biotechnology.

Dr. Nathan King, chair of the Department of Biological Sciences at SHSU, is spearheading the initiative. According to university leadership, the program’s design addresses a growing demand for applicants who possess not only textbook knowledge but also the technical proficiency required in modern clinical and research settings.

The program utilizes a hybrid campus model, bridging the university’s history in Huntsville with its growing investment in medical infrastructure. While the primary administrative and academic home of the program will be on the main SHSU campus in Huntsville, students will benefit from direct exposure to clinical environments by taking specific coursework at the College of Osteopathic Medicine building in Conroe. This proximity allows students to engage with a professional medical network early in their graduate studies.

The move comes at a time when competition for admission into health professional schools is at an all-time high. Admissions committees at medical and dental schools frequently look for post-baccalaureate work that proves a student’s ability to handle the intensive academic load of a professional doctorate. The SHSU program is structured to provide that evidentiary support, combining core biomedical science courses with specialized electives that mirror the rigor of medical school curricula.

Beyond clinical preparation, the curriculum is heavily weighted toward hands-on research. By integrating laboratory-based inquiry into the master's degree, the department aims to produce graduates who are prepared to step immediately into roles in medical device development, pharmaceuticals, and public health research laboratories.

Prospective students are encouraged to review the admissions requirements, which include a bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution and proof of prerequisite science coursework. Applications for the Fall 2024 semester are currently being accepted through the university’s graduate admissions portal at shsu.edu/admissions.

For those interested in learning more about the curriculum, faculty research interests, or the dual-campus experience, the Department of Biological Sciences is hosting virtual information sessions throughout the spring. Details regarding these sessions and further information about the degree plan can be found on the SHSU Department of Biological Sciences website.
