Woodlands Pride returns to park after court win

The Woodlands Pride festival is set to return to Northshore Park on Saturday, October 12, 2024, marking a significant development following a permit denial last year and subsequent legal action. The return to the popular park venue comes after a federal court ruling cleared the way for the LGBTQ+ community celebration.

Last year, The Woodlands Pride organization faced a setback when its application for a permit to host the festival at Northshore Park in July 2023 was denied by The Woodlands Township Board in August 2023. The official reason provided for the denial was that the festival included vendors, which the Township claimed constituted "commercial activity" and violated its park usage policies.

In response, The Woodlands Pride filed a federal lawsuit against the Township in September 2023 in the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of Texas. The organization argued that the denial violated its First Amendment rights, specifically freedom of speech and assembly, pointing out that other festivals and events with vendors, such as farmers' markets and arts festivals, had been permitted in the park.

In early 2024, U.S. District Judge Kenneth M. Hoyt issued a preliminary injunction partially siding with The Woodlands Pride. The injunction effectively directed the Township not to discriminate against future permit applications based on the content of the event, thereby clearing a path for The Woodlands Pride to reapply and secure Northshore Park for its festival.

Due to the permit denial, The Woodlands Pride held its 2023 festival at a relocated venue, The Woodlands Waterway Marriott Hotel & Convention Center, on October 14, 2023. For 2024, the festival was initially scheduled for May 11th but was rescheduled to October 12th to ensure its return to Northshore Park, a move made possible by the court ruling.
