I-45 Conroe NB Crash: Multi-Vehicle, Spill, Injuries

CONROE, Texas – A major multi-vehicle accident brought northbound Interstate 45 to a complete standstill in Conroe on Friday afternoon, May 24, 2024, triggering a massive emergency response and snarling holiday weekend traffic for miles.

The crash, which occurred just north of League Line Road at Exit 91, was first reported to Montgomery County emergency dispatchers at approximately 1:58 p.m. The collision involved at least one tractor-trailer hauling medical supplies and a pickup truck. According to initial reports from the Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS), the force of the impact resulted in significant wreckage across all three northbound main lanes of the interstate.

Conroe Fire Department, Montgomery County Hospital District medics, and state troopers arrived on the scene within minutes. Emergency responders confirmed that multiple individuals sustained injuries during the crash. Several victims were treated on-site before being transported to area hospitals. Officials have not yet released the names or specific conditions of those involved, as the investigation into the cause of the wreck remains ongoing.

The incident was further complicated by a significant diesel fuel spill resulting from the tractor-trailer’s compromised fuel tanks. The presence of hazardous materials required the mobilization of specialized Hazmat cleanup teams to contain the spill and prevent it from entering local drainage systems. DPS troopers worked to manage the scene while the fuel was neutralized and the scattered debris was cleared from the roadway.

The closure of the main lanes caused a ripple effect of congestion throughout the region. Traffic backups stretched southward past FM 1488, creating substantial delays for motorists attempting to leave the Houston area for the Memorial Day weekend. Officials issued urgent advisories throughout the afternoon, urging commuters to seek alternate routes, such as the I-45 feeder roads or Highway 75, to bypass the site of the investigation.

As of Friday evening, the lanes remained closed while crews finalized the cleanup process. Authorities noted that major commercial vehicle accidents involving fuel leaks often require lengthy investigations to ensure the structural integrity of the highway surface before it can be reopened to high-speed traffic.

Updates regarding the accident investigation and traffic flow can be monitored through the Texas Department of Transportation’s DriveTexas.org website or via the official social media channels of the Conroe Police Department and Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office. Drivers are reminded to exercise caution when traveling through active crash scenes and to adhere to the Move Over/Slow Down law, which requires motorists to vacate the lane closest to emergency vehicles and work crews.
