Montgomery County Artists Honored at TX Awards

MONTGOMERY COUNTY — The local creative community has officially cemented its status as a powerhouse in the Lone Star State. Montgomery County artists dominated the 2024 Texas Country Reporter People’s Choice Awards, securing the top prize and three runner-up spots in a competition that featured thousands of independent artisans from across Texas.
Amy Turner, a Montgomery resident and the proprietor of The Farmhouse Store located at 14352 Liberty St., took home the prestigious title of overall winner for Best Artist. A fixture in the local art scene with more than 30 years of experience, Turner has gained a devoted following for her whimsical style. Since opening her storefront in July 2022, Turner has utilized the space to showcase her original fine art, curated home decor, and gifts. Her signature "Whimsical Cow" paintings have become a hallmark of her brand, drawing praise from collectors far beyond the county line.
The success of Montgomery County artists did not stop at the top spot. Three other local women were recognized as runners-up in the Best Artisan category, highlighting the diverse range of craftsmanship present in the region.
Conroe-based designer Laura Lee, the creative force behind Laura Lee's Designs, was honored for her work in polymer clay jewelry. Launching her business three years ago after two years of practice, Lee has become known for her intricate, lightweight earrings that balance modern trends with handcrafted quality.
Joining her in the winner’s circle is Ashley Taylor, owner of Conroe-based Taylor's Sweet Treats. Taylor turned a hobby—baking birthday cookies for her own children—into a full-fledged enterprise in 2020. Her custom sugar cookies, finished with intricate royal icing designs, have become a staple for local events and celebrations.
From The Woodlands, Rebecca Conroy of Rebecca Conroy Fine Art was also recognized for her professional contributions to the Texas art landscape. An artist who has been honing her craft since 2017, Conroy specializes in rich, evocative oil paintings. Her portfolio frequently explores the natural beauty of the state, ranging from expansive Texas landscapes to delicate florals and bold abstract works.
The awards are an extension of the Texas Country Reporter Festival, a massive annual gathering hosted by television icons Bob and Kelli Phillips. The festival, which took place on October 28, 2023, in Waxahachie, serves as a celebration of all things Texan, drawing vendors and visitors from across the country.
Following the festival, the organizers invited the public to participate in online voting for the People’s Choice categories, which remained open from December 1, 2023, through January 31, 2024. The official winners were unveiled on March 1, 2024, spotlighting a selection of makers that the organizers described as the backbone of Texas creativity.
