Hardy Toll Rd NB Shut by 2-Truck Hazmat Crash

Hardy Toll Rd NB Shut by 2-Truck Hazmat Crash

HARRIS COUNTY, Texas — A major multi-vehicle accident involving two 18-wheelers brought northbound traffic on the Hardy Toll Road to a standstill for several hours on Tuesday, March 19, prompting a significant emergency response and forcing long-term closures near the FM 1960 exit.

The collision occurred at approximately 1:20 p.m., according to the Harris County Sheriff’s Office. Deputies arrived shortly thereafter to secure the scene, finding both tractor-trailers obstructing all northbound lanes. The sheer size of the vehicles, combined with the nature of the wreckage, necessitated a complex recovery operation.

A critical factor in the extended closure was a hazardous materials spill resulting from the crash. One of the trucks sustained damage that caused fuel to leak onto the roadway, requiring the dispatch of a specialized Hazmat team to contain the spill and ensure environmental safety before the road could be reopened to regular traffic.

While emergency crews worked to manage the environmental hazard and clear the debris, the Harris County Sheriff’s Office diverted all northbound commuters off the toll road at FM 1960. The diversion caused a ripple effect of heavy traffic congestion throughout the surrounding surface streets and nearby arterial roads.

Traffic analysts and local authorities advised motorists to avoid the North Houston corridor entirely for the remainder of the afternoon. Recommended alternate routes included Interstate 45, U.S. 59/69, State Highway 249, and the Grand Parkway (SH 99).

As of late Tuesday, officials had not released specific details regarding the cause of the crash or the medical status of those involved. The Harris County Sheriff’s Office Vehicular Crimes Division is expected to lead the investigation into the circumstances of the collision.

Residents and commuters are encouraged to monitor local traffic resources for updates on ongoing road conditions. Real-time traffic maps and updates on road closures in the Greater Houston area can be tracked through the Houston TranStar website at houstontranstar.org or by following the Harris County Sheriff's Office on X (formerly Twitter) at @HCSOTexas.

Authorities have not yet confirmed when all lanes were fully reopened, but cleanup efforts continued well into the evening hours. No further information regarding potential citations or charges related to the incident has been made available at this time.
