Alley's Girl Train: Thought-provoking journey of healing

Alley's Girl Train: Thought-provoking journey of healing

CONROE, Texas — The Alley Theatre recently concluded a successful two-night engagement of Amy Evans’s The Girl Train at the Owen Theatre in Conroe, marking a significant milestone for the company’s community outreach efforts. Performances held on Friday, November 17, and Saturday, November 18, 2023, at the 225 Metcalf St. venue drew praise for their raw exploration of the Black female experience.

Directed by Candice D'Meza, the production centers on four women embarking on a train journey toward a meditation retreat. As the locomotive rolls forward, the narrative dives into the internal landscapes of characters dealing with grief, mental health crises, and the burden of professional expectations.

The ensemble cast anchored the production with deeply personal portrayals. Tiffanie Green stepped into the role of Shunta, a woman navigating the heavy grief following the loss of her mother. Krystal Uchem played Talia, whose arc addresses the complexities of mental health struggles, while Crystal Marie Whitehead portrayed Lena, a psychologist forced to confront her own need for the therapy she provides to others. Shae Wilson completed the quartet as Jo, a character whose polished exterior conceals long-standing personal trauma.

A standout element of the staging was the integration of original music composed by D'Meza. Rather than relying on a pre-recorded score, the actors performed the compositions live, creating a heightened sense of intimacy and synchronicity that defined the production's tone.

The performance at the Owen Theatre served as a primary showcase for the Alley at UOA initiative. This program acts as a bridge between the Alley Theatre’s institutional resources and local academic communities, specifically targeting students and faculty at the University of Houston-Downtown, Lone Star College-Montgomery, Prairie View A&M University, and Texas Southern University. By bringing high-caliber professional theater into suburban and campus settings, the Alley aims to foster dialogue surrounding modern social themes.

The production was made possible through a collaboration of funding partners, including the Houston Arts Alliance, the National Endowment for the Arts, and the Alley Theatre’s Board of Directors. Their support underscores a growing regional commitment to producing theater that addresses mental health, trauma, and the necessity of communal healing.

Local audience members noted that the production’s strength lay in its vulnerability. By tackling the intersections of identity and mental wellness, The Girl Train provided a space for reflection that resonated well beyond the final curtain call.
