Man Charged with Felony Child Injury

Man Charged with Felony Child Injury

SPRING, Texas – A Spring man remains in the Montgomery County Jail this week following the brutal beating of his girlfriend’s two-year-old son, an assault that left the toddler fighting for his life in a pediatric intensive care unit.

Michael Allen, 32, was taken into custody by the Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office (MCSO) following a late-night incident on Friday, January 12. Deputies were dispatched to a Chevron gas station located in the 22000 block of Aldine Westfield Road at approximately 11:30 p.m. after reports of an unconscious child.

Upon arrival, deputies found the two-year-old unresponsive and exhibiting signs of severe physical trauma. The child was immediately transported to HCA Houston Healthcare Northwest, but due to the complexity and severity of the injuries, doctors ordered an emergency transfer to Texas Children’s Hospital in the Texas Medical Center.

Medical staff at the facility reported that the toddler was suffering from brain swelling, internal cranial bleeding, a fractured skull, and a detached retina. Physicians noted that the constellation of injuries was consistent with violent abuse rather than the accidental fall initially described by Allen. The child, whose identity is being withheld due to his age, was subsequently placed on life support.

Investigators determined that Allen, the boyfriend of the child’s mother, had been the sole caregiver for the toddler while the mother was at work during the time the injuries were sustained. When interviewed by law enforcement, Allen provided inconsistent accounts regarding how the child was harmed, initially attempting to attribute the condition to a fall in the shower.

Authorities rejected the explanation based on the forensic evidence provided by medical experts. Allen was subsequently charged with Injury to a Child with Serious Bodily Injury, a first-degree felony under Texas law. If convicted, the charge carries a potential sentence of five to 99 years or life in prison.

Allen made his initial appearance in a Montgomery County courtroom on Tuesday, January 16. A judge set his bond at $250,000. As of Wednesday morning, he remains in custody at the Montgomery County Jail.

The Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office has classified the case as an ongoing investigation. Child Protective Services (CPS) is also involved in the case, standard procedure when a child suffers life-threatening injuries while in the care of an adult.

The toddler remains in critical condition. Hospital representatives have not released further updates on his prognosis.

Anyone with additional information regarding this case or the household dynamics is encouraged to contact the Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office at 936-760-5800 or contact Multi-County Crime Stoppers at 1-800-392-STOP to provide information anonymously.

According to data from the Texas Department of Family and Protective Services, cases of child abuse resulting in serious bodily injury have remained a persistent concern in the Greater Houston area over the last fiscal year. Resources for families in crisis and information on how to report suspected abuse can be found at the official Texas Abuse Hotline website at txabusehotline.org.
